Study Validation

Study validation ensures that the study and patient data stored in AdvaPACS is accurate, complete, and up to date. As data is imported into AdvaPACS, it is checked for conflicting or missing data. If an issue is found, the study will be placed on the study validation queue for validation or correction.

Study Validation Modes

Study validation operates based on the validation mode that is enabled. The current available modes are:

Regardless of the enabled mode, AdvaPACS checks each uploaded study for missing data. If any of the following are missing, the study will be routed to the study validation queue:

  • Patient ID
  • Patient Name
  • DOB
  • Sex
  • Accession Number

Do not validate studies against an order

AdvaPACS does not search for a corresponding order. Instead, it only compares uploaded studies to their corresponding existing patient records (if present) stored in AdvaPACS. It specifically checks if the newly uploaded study's patient record matches with the existing patient record.

For example, a patient record with the following information already exists in AdvaPACS:

  • Patient ID: ABC123
  • Patient Name: Burroughs^Daniel

And a new study with the following information is uploaded to AdvaPACS:

  • Patient ID: ABC123
  • Patient Name: Burroughs^Danny

The patient ID's match but the patient names don't. In this case, the study will be routed to the study validation queue since these patients are unlikely to be the same person.

Once the study is in the study validation queue, users can investigate and confirm whether these patients are the same or not. If it is a new patient, they may choose to create a new patient record for it and update its Patient ID. But if it's the same patient, users can choose the correct patient name between the two.

In this mode, if any of the following are detected, the study is routed to the study validation queue:

  • Missing data
  • Mismatching data

Validate studies against an order

AdvaPACS executes the processes in Do not validate studies against an order and compares the studies to their corresponding order.

In this mode, if any of the following are detected, the study is routed to the study validation queue:

  • No matching order found
  • Multiple matching orders found

Automatically generate order

AdvaPACS generates an order from the uploaded study's DICOM header if no order is found.

In this mode, if any of the following are detected, the study is routed to the study validation queue:

  • Missing data
  • Mismatching data
info

When the Assigning Authorities feature is enabled, if an uploaded study has an unrecognized Issuer of Patient ID or Issuer of Accession Number, the study will be placed in the study validation queue.

Unrecognized Issuers of Patient ID in the Other Patient IDs Sequence will be ignored.

Searching and Filtering Studies Requiring Validation

Studies that require validation are routed to the study validation listing page. This page allows you to search and filter studies that you want to validate.

Search Studies

You can search for studies using the search bar. You can search studies using the following details:

  • Patient Name
  • Patient ID
  • DOB
  • Description
  • Accession Number
  • Accession Number Issuer (when Assigning Authorities is enabled)
  • Patient ID Issuer (when Assigning Authorities is enabled)

Filter Studies

You can also filter studies using the following filters:

  • All
  • Pending
  • Validating
  • Deleting

Manual Study Validation Screen

The manual study validation screen contains options that allow you to validate studies.

To access this screen, click on the "validate" button of a specific patient in the study validation listing page.

The screen is divided into two sections:

Study Requiring Validation

This section contains the details of the study that requires validation, as well as options to view its images and delete the study, if necessary.

Search Patient

This section contains the studies with their patient details that already exists in AdvaPACS's storage. Here you can search and view them compare them to the study requiring validation. It includes radio buttons for selecting which patient details to use, and an option to create a new patient if one doesn't already exist.

Validating Studies

Validating studies involves several steps and different approaches depending on the study requiring validation; for a step-by-step instruction in validating studies, see How to Validate Studies.
